Variegated houseplants? What does that actually mean? You have seen this word all over the internet but never truly knew the meaning behind it.
Variegation: alter in appearance; especially by adding color.
When someone claims that their plant is a variegated Monstera Decliciosa or a variegated Golden Pothos, it means that it has unique markings and colors that make it stand out amongst other plants. Similar to the markings on dogs and cats.
This is variegation.

If you can get your hands on a variegated plant, consider yourself lucky. Some of these plants are very hard to come by and if you do, be prepared to dish out the money. Some of these can be quite expensive.
Sometimes you may not even know it is variegated until it starts to grow. For instance, when I first purchased our Golden Pothos, the foliage was totally green with no signs of variegation. As it started to grow, new leaves began to unravel these gorgeous yellow white markings! It is truly very unique.
No two leaves are the same.

Often, a plant may not show its variegation if it is not taken care of properly. Be sure to give the plant all of its needs. If it is not getting adequate light, then the leaves may not show their variegation.
What are some popular houseplants that variegate easily? Keep reading to find out what variegated houseplants you need to add to your collection!
1. Variegated Banana Plant

A variegated Banana Plant is not something you will easily come by. The foliage is on this plant is absolutely stunning. The combination of white, pale and dark green is something I would never be able to pass up if given the chance.
- Botanical Name: Musaceae
- Light: Bright light – full sun.
- Soil: Well draining organic mix.
- Water: They like moisture and consistency.
- Temperature: Average temperature but high humidity.
2. White Fushion Calathea

I’ve had my eyes on this one for quite some time now. White Fushion Calathea is common enough to find online. Try Etsy, for example. You can find many different types of variegated plants on there. I have heard instances of people finding this Calathea at their local nursery as well. Most versions of this Calathea will look similar in appearance.
Imagine this plant on your mantle or displayed as a centerpiece on your dining room table.
What a statement plant this can be!
- Botanical Name: Calathea leitzei
- Light: Bright indirect light – part shade
- Soil: Well draining potting mix.
- Water: They like moisture and consistency. Do not over water. Overwatering can cause root rot.
- Temperature: Average temperature but high humidity. Try misting it 1-2 times per week to increase humidity.
3. Variegated Monstera

We all love our Monstera Deliciosas already, but imagine how much more you would love a variegated Monstera! The beauty of the split leaf foliage in combination with the split leaf coloring is priceless. I have seen people propagate their variegated Monstera and try to sell them for almost $100! But let me tell you, they are usually sold out. People want them, including myself!
Because Monsteras are so popular, you can most likely find a variegated version on Etsy. Some foliage can be spotted white or totally white!
That is the beauty of variegation!
- Botanical Name: Monstera deliciosa
- Light: Moderate indirect light to part shade.
- Soil: Well draining potting mix.
- Water: Fairly easy to water. Allow top soil to dry out before watering.
- Temperature: Average temperature but higher humidity. Try misting 1-2 times per week.

It is my pride and joy.
I was not aware there was a variegated version of the String of Hearts. Now that I am aware of this, you bet your two cents I will get my hands on one of these bad boys. I can just picture it displayed on the same shelf above our bed with our other String of Hearts.
- Botanical Name: Ceropegia woodii
- Light: Bright indirect light.
- Soil: Well draining cactus or succulent mix.

5. Ficus Elastica Tineke

Look at this! It literally looks fake. At first glance, I thought this was a painting. It’s not. It’s real. I could not believe my eyes. The Fiscus Elastica Tineke is another plant that is high up on my wish list.
Similar situation as the White Fushion Calathea, the Fiscus Tineke is a common variegated plant. All versions of this plant look essentially the same. I have seen this plant all over Etsy and some sellers even have different sizes. That is a nice option to have when finding a place to display your new plant in your home.
- Botanical Name: Fiscus elastica
- Light: Bright indirect light.
- Soil: Well draining potting mix.
- Water: Keep it moist during the growing season. Come winter, it can tolerate more time between waterings.
- Temperature: Average temperature and humidity.
